We recently built up this slick set of wheels for our buddy John. John wanted a wheel to commute on, go off-road with and look good doing it. Together we picked out no nonsense parts for a durable wheelset with 32 spokes, strong rims and reliable, serviceable hubs. These are the type of wheels we love to build and believe everyone should have in their quiver. Don’t get us wrong, we love building up high end carbon rims with heirloom hubs, but everyone who rides their bike a lot needs a set of wheels that they can beat the shit out of and not worry about. That wheelset shouldn’t break the bank either, and these really fit the bill.
John ended up choosing H+Son Archetype rims and Shimano 105 hubs. With a wide and semi aero profile the Archetype rims have the benefits of being strong, relatively light and allow the use of some really wide tires. Shimano 105 hubs in silver, a classic hub that is easy to service, strong and beautiful in its simplicity were the next choice. And To compliment the grey finish on the rims and polished silver hub we chose Sapim Race double butted spokes in silver and matching brass nipples. This isn’t a weight conscious build, rather one built to withstand John’s riding style while being easy to keep rolling for the next decade.
We love builds like this, and if you would like us to lace up a set for you please don’t hesitate to contact us.
A set of wheels just like John’s typically go for $385, and this set weighs just over 1900g.
